Applied Learning Programme (ALP)

Introduction

At Chung Cheng High School (Main), our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) goes beyond the traditional classroom. Introduced in 2019, this timetabled, non-examinable programme is designed to develop students’ 21st Century Competencies, prepare them for the future of work and nurture them into active, concerned citizens.

We achieve this by building a strong sense of purpose, offering highly relevant content and keeping students motivated through hands-on learning. Over the two-year programme, our Upper Secondary students will learn to:

• Communicate effectively across a variety of mediums and formats.

• Apply problem-solving skills by proposing practical solutions within specific industries.

• Demonstrate empathy by understanding the unique contexts and needs of different communities in Singapore and across Asia.

• Generate innovative solutions to meet societal needs.

The programme structure is as follows:

The Learning Tracks: Dive or Discover

Students in the ALP are encouraged to choose topics that excite and challenge them. Starting in 2026, students will choose between two distinct tracks to build their Communication and Problem-Solving skills: Dive or Discover.

The Dive Track

• This track is for students who want to focus deeply on one core skill. Students will master either:

  • Communication via Public Speaking module OR

  • Problem-Solving via Service Learning through Design Thinking module.

• The Discover Track

  • This track is for students who want broad exposure to both Communication and Problem-Solving skills. Students will select modules from the following 2026 offerings:

Learning Through Empathy

To truly understand the challenges facing society, students will participate in a variety of local learning journeys. They will interact directly with industry professionals and engage in authentic, real-world tasks. This exposure helps them understand how communication and problem-solving are applied in the workplace to add value to society.

CREATE

In their graduating year, students apply their skills to give back to their school and society through the CREATE framework:

• C – Cross-Cultural Learning (Overseas Learning Journey)

  • Opportunities to interact with professionals and peers abroad.

• R – Real-World Exposure (Work Attachment)

  • First-hand experience through internships and job shadowing.

• E – Exploration of Interests (Subject Interest Platform)

  • Specialised modules run by various departments for students to explore subjects beyond the textbook.

• A – Applied Opportunities

  • Participation in external competitions or Applied Learning Modules (ApLM) held at Polytechnics.

• T – Transformative Projects (Self-Directed)

  • Student-led advocacy or research projects designed to improve the school experience.

• E – Experiential Engagement

  • Platforms for students to share their voice, such as leading Assembly programmes or guiding visitors during Open House.
